Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers State, Suspend Governor, Fubara

President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to ongoing political unrest. In a nationwide address on Tuesday, he announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for six months. Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the state's administrator for this period.

Citing Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows for such measures during situations of national danger or disaster, Tinubu expressed concern over recent pipeline vandalism by militants and the lack of action from the state government. He emphasized the necessity of extraordinary measures to restore governance, peace, and security in Rivers State.

The President assured that the state's judicial branch would continue its functions unaffected. He expressed hope that this intervention would prompt all political stakeholders in Rivers State to adhere to constitutional obligations, thereby restoring peace and order.
