Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), highlighted several key security challenges affecting Nigeria and the broader Sahel region. He noted that geopolitical tensions, including the power competition between the United States, Russia, and China in Africa, have exacerbated these challenges. The withdrawal of Niger Republic troops from the Multinational Joint Task Force and similar withdrawals from Burkina Faso and Mali further complicate regional security, contributing to an influx of weapons and terrorists into Nigeria.

Abubakar also pointed out the impact of the Russia-Ukraine War on the NAF’s ability to maintain its Mi-series helicopters, crucial for counter-terrorism operations. Despite these challenges, he emphasized the support received from the USA, China, and Russia in acquiring necessary aircraft and munitions. He stressed the importance of balancing these international relationships for Nigeria’s security interests.
Additionally, he highlighted the technological advancements used by non-state actors, such as autonomous drones and satellite communications, and the threat they pose if replicated by insurgents in Nigeria. The rise in coup d'états and the withdrawal of various troops from regional security frameworks further destabilize the region, necessitating proactive measures by the NAF to ensure national security and prosperity.
Abubakar acknowledged the progress made in combating various criminal activities but underscored the need for continuous improvement, given the ongoing economic challenges and their impact on security.
