As the planned protests from August 1st to 10th, 2024, approach, VonFrederick Global Security Africa is committed to providing a comprehensive guide to ensure your safety, awareness of rights, and the lawful conduct of participants. Whether you are attending to express your concerns or to document the events, it’s essential to be prepared and informed. Remember, your safety and security is our priority.

1. Understanding Your Rights and the Law
Basic Rights of Protesters
• Freedom of Expression: Section 39 of the Nigerian constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. This includes the right to protest peacefully.
• Right to Information: You have the right to document events and share information, provided it does not incite violence or infringe on the rights of others.
• Right to Legal Representation: If detained or arrested, you have the right to remain silent and request a lawyer. Do not speak without your lawyer present.
Key Legal Considerations
• Permits and Permissions: While peaceful protests are a right, some states require permits for large gatherings. Ensure the protest you are joining has the necessary approvals.
• Section 45 permits these rights to be restricted in the interests of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health, or to protect the rights or freedoms of others.
• For example; Yesterday Tuesday, 30th of July, a Lagos High Court has granted an exparte application filed by the State’s Attorney General, Senior Advocate of Nigeria to restrict the protest in Lagos state to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota and the Peace Park in Ketu.
Similarly, Kaduna State Police Command asked all groups in the state planning to participate in the nationwide protest to provide necessary details as instructed by the IGP. While these actions are not illegal, they consititute important factors all stakeholders must consider
• Public Order Act Compliance: Be aware of laws governing public order and avoid actions that could be deemed as incitement to violence or disturbance of public peace.
• Curfews and Restrictions: Stay updated on any curfews or movement restrictions that might be imposed during the protest period.

2. Preparation and Planning
Research and Coordination
• Understand the Cause: Know the goals, demands and key messages of the protest. Aligning with the cause will help maintain focus and cohesion. This protest has been termed ‘End Bad Governance In Nigeria Protest’ ‘Hardship Protest’ ‘Hunger and Hardship Protest’ and several other monikers
• Mental Preparedness: Be mentally ready for a range of scenarios, including large crowds and potential law enforcement actions.
• Join Organized Groups: Consider joining a well-organized group or collective. This offers better coordination and safety.
Personal Safety and Gear
• Essential Gear: Carry a small bag with water, snacks, a face mask, hand sanitizer, and basic first aid supplies. Consider bringing goggles and a mask if tear gas might be used. Carry an a powerbank for backup power
• Dress Appropriately: Wear comfortable, weather-suitable clothing and shoes. Avoid clothing with identifiable symbols if anonymity is desired.

3. During the Protest
Communication and Documentation
• Stay Informed: Use encrypted communication apps and follow trusted sources for real-time updates. Have a backup communication plan in case networks are jammed.
Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Protests can be physically demanding. Drink plenty of water and eat light snacks.
• Document Safely: If you choose to record events, do so safely. Keep your phone charged and avoid confrontation while filming.

4. Safety and De-escalation
• Know Your Surroundings: Familiarize yourself with the protest route and nearby safe areas. Always have an exit plan.
• Stay Peaceful: Keep the protest non-violent. Avoid confrontations with law enforcement and counter-protesters. Use de-escalation techniques if tensions rise. Yes, people have the right to protest but this should be within the law so that public and private properties are safe.

5. Emergency Preparedness
Avoiding Potential Risks
• Steer Clear of Hotspots: If a situation becomes tense or violent, move to a safer area. Avoid confrontation zones.
• Emergency Contacts: Keep emergency numbers handy, including the police, fire department, local hospitals, legal aid, and trusted contacts.
