The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has handed over 50 operational vehicles equipped with communication gadgets to various security agencies to enhance the fight against insecurity in the territory.
During the handover ceremony in Abuja on Friday, Mr. Wike emphasized the importance of supporting security agencies with necessary logistics to combat crime in the FCT. He distributed the vehicles as follows:
FCT Police Command: 24 vehicles
Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps: 8 vehicles
Advance Party/Security Monitoring, FCT Administration: 6 vehicles
State Security Services: 5 vehicles
Guard Brigade of the Nigerian Army: 3 vehicles
Nigeria Air Force, 005, Abuja; Naval Unit; Nigerian Immigration Service; National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency: 1 vehicle each
Mr. Wike stressed that the focus is now on security, a key agenda in the renewed hope mantra, alongside infrastructure and development. He highlighted that President Bola Tinubu prioritizes the security of lives and property, noting that leaders who cannot ensure this have no place in governance.
He stated, "It is our responsibility to provide the tools for the security agencies to confront these criminals and make sure we sleep with our two eyes closed."
Mr. Wike urged residents to support and pray for the security agencies, acknowledging their sacrifices. He commended the agencies for reducing the crime rate in the FCT and promised continued support by providing necessary tools. He also reminded the agencies to use the vehicles for their intended purpose and not for private use.
Director of State Security Services (SSS), Adamu Gwary, highlighted the growing security concerns in the FCT and expressed that the operational vehicles would enhance the capacity of security agencies to respond promptly to distress situations and combat crime.
Speaking on behalf of the security agencies, the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, thanked Mr. Wike for his ongoing support. Represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kayode Ojakinwa, Mr. Igweh assured that the vehicles would be used effectively for the security of all.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also reports that on April 16, the minister donated 100 motorcycles to security agencies to help combat crime in hard-to-reach communities.
