The Nigerian Adamawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday strongly criticized the killing of two young men by security forces operating in the Mubi South Local Government Area.

The security forces, comprising personnel from the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Customs Service, reportedly shot and killed the two men, who were each riding motorcycles in the Nasarawo ward, two days prior.

During the Assembly’s session on Tuesday, lawmakers condemned the senseless killing of the young men by the security personnel, who were supposed to be safeguarding lives.

The condemnation was prompted by a motion put forward by Hon. Yohanna Sahabo Jauro, the representative of Mubi South constituency.

In its resolutions, the Assembly called on the security agencies involved to conduct their operations with professionalism and focus their activities on border areas instead of within the metropolis.

Additionally, the Assembly urged security forces to reduce the number of checkpoints within Mubi and tasked its Committee on Security to work with federal lawmakers to find a permanent solution to the issue.

While presenting the motion, Mr. Yohanna informed the House that military and customs officers had unjustifiably killed two of his constituents just two days earlier.

He explained, “Mubi South LGA has 10 political wards, out of which 2 are at the LGA headquarters while 8 are in rural areas. These 8 wards are without filling stations for people to buy fuel for their cars, motorcycles, and other day-to-day activities.”

He further stated, “My constituents in the affected wards buy fuel from the metropolis and take it to the rural areas. Unfortunately, they face numerous challenges from the military and customs officers while transporting the product to their communities.”

Mr. Yohanna lamented, “Security agencies have been harassing, intimidating, and sometimes even killing my peace-loving people.”

He added, “In the case of the two boys, the security agencies opened fire on them after sighting them separately transporting fuel to their communities on motorcycles.”

He clarified that the victims were transporting fuel for personal use in their villages and not for smuggling purposes. Mr. Yohanna warned that the situation was escalating and could no longer be tolerated.

He stressed that it was unacceptable for security personnel to shoot and kill innocent civilians they were meant to protect, urging the Assembly to take firm action against such behavior.

All members of the Assembly present echoed their condemnation of the incident and emphasized the need for urgent intervention.

Following the adoption of the resolutions, Speaker Hon. Bathiya Wesley, who led the session, instructed the Assembly’s Clerk to forward the resolutions to the appropriate authorities for immediate action.
