The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has announced that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will host the upcoming All African Military Games this November.

During a recent courtesy visit to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, General Musa commended the minister's efforts in revitalizing Abuja and highlighted the significance of the event, which is set to attract over 40 countries and showcase Nigeria's security and hospitality.

“This grand event is not only an opportunity for athletic excellence but also for Nigeria to reinforce its status as a secure and welcoming destination on the global stage,” Musa said, addressing how the event will counter negative perceptions about Nigeria’s safety. He assured that Abuja remains one of the safest cities in Africa, despite foreign narratives suggesting otherwise. “The impression given by some foreign narratives is that Nigeria is hostile. Yet, we know that Abuja is a haven of safety, and we want to project that through the African Military Games.”

General Musa further emphasized the Armed Forces' readiness to support the FCT and its administration in any way necessary to ensure the success of the event. He pointed to recent global security challenges, such as an airport attack in Mali by non-state actors, as a reason for vigilance but remained optimistic about Abuja’s security.

In response, Minister Wike expressed full support for the Games, viewing them as an opportunity to enhance Abuja’s image internationally and to boost the local economy. “This event will showcase Abuja to the world, proving that the city and Nigeria are safe and ready to host international events. People often form impressions from afar without firsthand experience, but I believe they will leave with a different narrative,” Wike said.

Wike highlighted the FCT administration's commitment to collaborating closely with security agencies to prioritize the safety of all attendees. “No effort will be spared to ensure there are no security threats during the event. Nigeria must ensure that this international game runs without disruption,” he added, acknowledging the importance of a seamless, secure experience for participants and spectators alike.

He further proposed a task force to streamline preparations and address potential logistical challenges, suggesting that representatives from his office coordinate closely with the Armed Forces. “I believe we should establish a small task force to ensure seamless execution. Let’s have three officials from my office coordinate with you to streamline logistics and address any immediate needs,” Wike stated.

The Minister reiterated that the Games will help counter negative narratives about Nigeria’s safety and serve as an opportunity to present Abuja in a positive light. “This platform gives us an opportunity to present Abuja and Nigeria in a favorable light, shaping outsiders’ perceptions and dispelling myths. It is vital that we make a lasting impression on our guests,” he said.

General Musa, echoing Wike’s sentiments, acknowledged the progress seen in Abuja’s transformation over the past year and emphasized the importance of showcasing this to the international community. “Within a very short period of one year, things have turned around for the better in the FCT. We are not surprised because you are known for your commitment to work, especially in construction and putting things in order. The Armed Forces is here to support you in ensuring the continued growth of the FCT, free from any internal or external threats,” he remarked.

As preparations continue, both the FCT administration and the Armed Forces are working to ensure that the All African Military Games not only highlight Nigeria’s commitment to security but also leave a lasting positive impression on its international guests.
